Refleksi-Refleksi | Reception and Tour | Dutch Museum of Silver
The KVVAK cordially invites its members to a special excursion to the Dutch Silver Museum in Schoonhoven on Tuesday, February 4. During the visit there will be a special lecture on the exhibition Refleksi-Refleksi which tells the story of Indonesia and the Netherlands through silver objects, after which there will be an explanation by the curator in the exhibit itself.
“Refleksi-Refleksi is Indonesian for reflections: a reflection on a particular subject from single or multiple perspectives. In this exhibition, silver objects tell stories about the relationship between Indonesia and the Netherlands, from the first trade contacts to the beginning of the Indonesian republic. It is a shared history of two nations in which cultures influenced each other in terms of language, food, architecture and customs.
The main trade goods brought to the Netherlands from the Indonesian archipelago are spices, coffee, tea and sugar. This provides for the production of new objects such as tea cans, nutmeg rascals and tobacco boxes. Dutch merchants on the spot try to establish good contacts with local princes. The parties donate objects of silver and gold to each other. As more people travel to the archipelago and/or learn about the products, new needs arise for items such as travel goods and home furnishings. Silver manufacturer Van Kempen and Begeer and Vos responds by opening stores in Java.
The traces left by the Netherlands in Indonesia are not perceived positively by everyone. The building that now houses the Nederlands Zilvermuseum Schoonhoven even plays a role in the history of the Indonesian War of Independence. The stories behind the objects can have a shiny but also a matte side.” Read more
