
Kōdō workshop
Kōdō (“The way of fragrance”) is the Japanese art of appreciating scents that originated in the sixth century. It is a traditional ceremony like Sado (tea ceremony), Kado (ikebana flower arranging) and is considered one of the most refined elements of Japanese culture.
Mrs. Mina Hayakawa of Kyoto is one of the few contemporary performers of this ceremony. In cooperation with the Waza no Michi Foundation and the KVVAK, she will conduct a Kōdō workshop lasting approximately ninety minutes on April 23.
During this workshop, up to ten participants will be initiated into the history of Kōdō, introduced to different scent types through a live demonstration, and then there will be a section where participants will try to distinguish the scents from each other. After a Japanese tea break, participants will try to recognize a scent using the classic epic “The Tale of Genji.
The workshop will be conducted in Japanese; a translator will be present who speaks both Dutch and English.
