For the Buddha and Not for a Goose: A Look at Two Korean Buddhist Paintings

With support from the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation, two Korean Buddhist paintings in the collection of the KVVAK have recently been restored. The first painting depicts a bodhisattva and the second depicts a protecting deity. These two anonymous works from the 19th century were displayed during large-scale public rituals in Buddhist temples. The calm countenance of the bodhisattva reveals little, yet these two works can tell us much. In his lecture, Karwin Cheung will discuss the function and meaning of the two paintings, their place in Korean Buddhist art, and the position of Buddhism in Korea.

Walk-in from 14:30, the lecture starts at 15:00.
